One of the people I recently learned about who is like Chris is Ricky Williams. I was watching a show on ESPN called 30:30. It was doing an episode on the life of NFL running back Ricky Williams. I had previously known that Ricky abruptly dropped out because of a failed drug test for the third time along with the enormous pressure put on him for being a pro athlete. The film was not based on his life in the NFL but the time from his early retirement to the time he returns. During this time he lived in numerous places all of which he was alone. One of these places was even Australia where he lived in a small one person tent for a couple months. Just like the McCandless type, Ricky found happiness by living alone along with doing things he didn’t think were wrong unlike the rest of society. The main reason Ricky found happiness alone was that he had social anxiety or in other words, he was afraid to be around with and communicating with other people. This anxiety could have started from when he was little and he had an experience with his father that negatively influenced him. This relates to how Chris’s dad was part of the reason he dropped out due to his strictness and wanting to control Chris’s life. The final way Ricky shows the McCandless type is that just like Chris he had the ideal American lifestyle more than most people fantasized and he got rid of all of it because of his want to be alone.
